A softer start to the week
Monday can feel busy before anything has happened. A little time to settle in can help you find your way into the week.

You open your laptop and last week is still there. A half-finished draft. The message you meant to answer. A few tabs you left open because they would remind you of something.
Then there’s this week. Meetings, errands, a deadline that looked further away on Friday.
It’s tempting to make a fresh list and promise yourself you’ll get through all of it. But before adding anything, give yourself a few minutes to arrive.
See what’s already here
Have a look at your calendar and the notes you left behind. Find out what actually needs your attention today.
Some things will have a real deadline. Others have simply been sitting there long enough to feel urgent. That idea you wrote down on Thursday might still be useful, but it doesn’t necessarily belong on this morning’s list.
You don’t have to organise the whole week. Just get familiar with the day in front of you.
Leave something for later, on purpose
An unfinished task has a way of following you around when you haven’t decided what to do with it.
If something can wait until Wednesday, put it there. If you’re waiting for an answer, leave yourself a note. If a task no longer matters, it’s okay to take it off the list.
Be specific enough that you won’t have to make the same decision again in an hour.
“Look at this after Tuesday’s meeting” gives you somewhere to leave it. “Must sort this out” tends to come along for the ride.
Choose what would make today feel enough
There might be ten things you could do. Which one would you be glad to have moved forward by the end of today?
Perhaps it’s sending the draft so someone else can read it. Preparing for tomorrow’s conversation. Finally answering the email that needs a thoughtful reply.
Let that be the thing you make room for. The smaller jobs will probably find their way into the gaps, as they usually do.
Leave a little room between things
When you plan the day, it’s easy to imagine a version of yourself who moves neatly from one task to the next.
The real version needs lunch. A moment after a long call. Time to find the document that was definitely saved somewhere sensible.
If you have some say over your calendar, leave a little space unclaimed. You can decide what to do with it when you get there. A walk, a late-running task, or simply making tea without checking the time.
Let Monday be a day
By the afternoon, something will probably have changed. A new request will arrive. A task will take longer than you thought. You might finish less than you hoped.
Have another look at what matters, and adjust what you can. You’re allowed to revise a plan you made at nine in the morning.
There are other days in the week. You don’t have to earn them by getting everything right today.
And if a little company would help you settle in, the room is open. Bring whatever you’ve chosen to spend time with. Make yourself comfortable.
The week can begin here.
