When focus won’t comeA gentle way to begin
Some days, settling into work takes a little longer. Here’s a gentle way to begin, without asking yourself to turn the whole day around.

You sit down with something to do. The coffee is there. The document is open. You read the same sentence three times, check something that didn’t need checking, and somehow it’s twenty minutes later.
It happens. Even with a clear desk and the best intentions, some days your attention keeps wandering off.
Before you spend the morning being cross with yourself, try making the next step a little smaller.
Give yourself somewhere to start
“Work on the project” is a lot to sit down with, especially when your mind is elsewhere. What would the first small action look like?
Read the last paragraph you wrote. Give the document a title. Put the notes you need in front of you. Write one sentence, even if you already know you’ll change it.
Choose something clear enough that you can do it without deciding five other things first. You can work out what comes after when you get there.
Put one distraction out of reach
You don’t have to tidy your whole desk or find the perfect playlist before beginning. Just notice what you keep reaching for.
If it’s your phone, leave it on the shelf behind you. If it’s a tab, close it for a few minutes. If it’s a thought about something you need to do later, write it on a scrap of paper so it has somewhere to wait.
Then come back to the small thing in front of you.
Try five quiet minutes
Give yourself five minutes with that one action. You can set a timer if it helps, or simply begin.
You don’t need to finish anything in that time. Read a little. Write a little. See whether the next step becomes clearer once you’re doing it.
When the five minutes are up, decide what would help now. You might want to carry on. You might need to stand up, get some water, or choose an easier place to begin. There’s room to adjust.
When it still feels difficult
Sometimes you make the task smaller and your attention still won’t settle.
Take a proper pause if you can. Look out of the window. Make something to eat if lunch has slipped past. Step outside for a few minutes without bringing another thing to listen to.
When you return, have another look at what you’re asking of yourself. Perhaps you can do the simpler part today. Perhaps you need a question answered before you can go further.
A difficult morning doesn’t have to decide the shape of the whole afternoon.
A little company, if you’d like it
If you’d rather not begin alone, you’re welcome to bring your small task to the room. Put on a little music and settle in alongside others doing their own thing.
You don’t need to arrive feeling focused.
Just bring somewhere to start.
